Honoring Hispanic Heritage Month Through Food

Community • September 12, 2024

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re excited to share some of our team’s favorite Latinx recipes and must-visit restaurants here in the NYC area! From traditional dishes that have been passed down through generations to modern takes on classic flavors, these spots and recipes capture the culinary diversity and vibrant culture of the Latinx community. These FHITfam favorites will guide you through a flavorful journey honoring the essence of Hispanic culture + Latinx food in the city we love!

RECIPES

FHITpro Tori loves making this delicious Peruvian dish that has been passed down from her grandmother. “I like this dish because it reminds me of my grandmother. Anytime we used to visit as kids, this was the first meal she would make for us. Today it is one of the only dishes that I can actually cook!”

RESTAURANTS

This Riverdale staple is one of FHITpro Eric’s favorite go-to spots. Serving artisanal Oaxacan-inspired food, the team behind Tobala provides a beverage and food menu that thoughtfully honors the culture and ingredients traditionally used in recipes. Come for a cocktail and stay for the food at this spot.

This UWS restaurant is one of FHITdesk team member Carla’s favorite neighborhood spots. The menu consists of an elevated, contemporary blend of Spanish and Latin-Caribbean cuisines. Stop by after an evening FHIX to try it for yourself. Some other restaurants that Carla thinks you should check out include Taqueria 86 & Venatería (for a mix of Spanish & Italian cuisine!).

Ryan on our FHITdesk team says the trip to Riverbank State Park should be on your list if you want to get a taste of his favorite Puerto Rican restaurant in the city. “The food is amazing and you sit over the Hudson River with a direct view of the George Washington Bridge!”. With food and an atmosphere like this, Sofrito strives to give you a taste of La Isla Del Encanto.

PS – this spot has the stamp of approval from Carla as well!

Fonda is a Fhitting Room favorite! FHITpro Dale frequents this Mexican restaurant, owned by Mexico City born chef, Roberto Santibañez. Fonda has 3 locations in Chelsea, Tribeca, and Park Slope, Brooklyn so you can get your muscles & margs fix in wherever you are. Dale also highly recommends La Diagonal Agaveria in Harlem for agave spirits, hand crafted cocktails and Mexican tapas after watching a performance from Ballet Hispanico at New York City Center in the UWS.

FHITpro Garen recommends this taco spot for lunch or dinner! Los Tacos #1 opened to bring the authentic Mexican taco to the East Coast, and so they have. Their tasty tacos come from family recipes and fresh, simple, and tasteful ingredients from back home in Mexico. Garen also recommends a NYC favorite chain Tacombi for a good Happy Hour just down the street!
